Distance with locked hind legs vs locked front legs?
At a competition this autumn I got chatting with some other participants. There was some discussion about distance with locked front legs versus locked back legs.

When I got Bonus, I was very clear that I didn't want to influence her in any way, but rather choose what came naturally to her. When I said this, people didn't quite understand and questioned me. They also said that you teach the dog one thing or another anyway, so how can you let the dog choose?
At that point, it was clear to me that this person trained in a different way than I do, and I explained how I had shaped the movements with voluntary behaviour and didn't use any form of luring or influence, but instead observed how Bonus moved when she offered the behaviour I was looking for.
In the film below you can see how Bonus offers a down with locked front legs. She slides on the slippery floor, but still offers a down where she doesn't move her front legs, but her back end moves backwards.
I've also heard some people say that it's much harder with locked front legs than with locked back legs, just try it yourself, etc. I don't agree with that. The comparison between human versus dog doesn't work here. Dogs walk on four legs (as a rule) whilst we walk on two. Therefore it's much harder for us than for them, but a human who is very good at doing handstands will naturally find it easier.
Bonus has only learnt locked front legs, but my future dogs will learn both, on different commands, so I can use whichever works best at competitions, and it's also very good training of strength and core muscles that a good competition dog needs.
