Do you want to train obedience, working/rescue dog or rally obedience but don't know where to start?
Or do you know what you want to do, but would like structured training with guidance from an instructor?
This course will give you a solid foundation – whether you want to compete or simply become a better handler.
This is the first of our dog sport courses, and we recommend it if you're interested in, for example, competition obedience (LP), hunting, Creative obedience, Rally obedience or working obedience. The course is also great for you if you don't necessarily want to compete, but would like to learn more about clicker training, become a better handler and enrich and mentally stimulate your dog in a fun way.
COURSE CONTENT
On this foundation course you will learn how to train most of the basic skills. You will learn to use different training techniques, such as capturing behaviour, shaping, targeting and environmental management. In addition to practical training, this course includes a theory component that introduces you to learning theory and the principles behind clicker training, as well as how we train a competition dog. You will become familiar with concepts such as voluntary behaviour, flow, reward placement, stimulus control and generalisation.
COURSE AIMS
… are that you will have acquired basic handler skills, and that you and your dog will be well on your way to learning most of the basic skills and progressing towards flow for some of them. After completing the course you should be able to continue training on your own and progress to one of these courses:
- Basic Skills for Dog Sport Level 2
- Bronze Badge Course
- Rally Obedience Level 1
TIMING
The course runs over 9 hours spread across 8 evenings, including one mandatory theory evening.
The first session will be an online theory evening Monday 17 August. We start at 19.00 and continue for approximately 2 hours. The remaining 7 sessions are practical training 17.45-18.45 each Thursday, from 20 August to 1 October.
LOCATION
We are based in our heated indoor premises at Skedsmokorset, but we will train outdoors when the weather permits it 🙂
PRICE
3190 kr.
Some of the basic skills we focus on in this course:
- Reward marker
- Targeting
- Sit (your dog can probably «sit»… But can it sit from a down position whilst you stand 10 metres away? 🤓 )
- Down
- Stand
- Stay
- Rear end awareness
- Starting position
- Recall with explosive start
- Heel + eye contact (introduction to heelwork with full focus!)
- Doggie Zen (self-control – performing exercises even with distractions nearby)
- Hold and pick up (retrieving)
- Release
- Jump
For each of these basic skills there are also several variations, and there are more basic skills than those listed here. We won't be able to cover all the basic skills during the course, so there will be some variation in which skills receive the most focus. What the course participants want will be prioritised.
